Hello magical friends, and welcome to the nineth episode of WZRD Radio. I’m your hostwitch Bess and I’m really looking forward to sharing this time with you. With all of us continuing to stay apart to protect our community, this time together is the social highlight of my month.
There’s a lot of exciting wizard rock news to tell you, but as always, let’s begin with some music.
First up is “It’s a Slytherin World” by Draco and the Malfoys.
~*~
That was “It’s a Slytherin World” by Draco and the Malfoys [lyrics], “Ambition” by Adam WarRock, and “Dungeons” by Slytherin Soundtrack [lyrics].
This month’s wandoscope is for listeners who carry beech wands.
The depth and breadth of your understanding and experience often comes in handy, beech wand, but this month it’s letting you down. Toward the beginning of the month you’re experiencing situations you’ve never even imagined before. Maybe it has something to do with a new acquaintance with a core that rubs you the wrong way, or you’re faced with a decision you don’t know how to make. It’s time to tap your inner Slytherin and find a solution that changes the frame of the problem entirely. If you’re not sure how to do that, try asking another beech or a thestral hair for advice. After all, no one is better at coming up with an unexpected answer.
Next up is another music break, starting with “Miss Bulstrode” by Justin Finch-Fletchley and the Sugar Quills.
~*~
That was “Miss Bulstrode” by Justin Finch-Fletchley and the Sugar Quills, “Ambitious, Delicious, Cunning, Stunning” by Miss Parkinson, and “Wizard Love” by Meeka Kitty.
As I mentioned earlier, the wizard rock world has a lot going on this month. We’re really finding our way with this muggle technology.
First of all, as always you should keep an eye on Tonks and the Aurors, Ashley Hamel, and LeakyCon, because they’re all very sneaky with their virtual concerts and you never know when one will pop up.
Speaking of Tonks and the Aurors, not only do they have concert dates tonight, August 1st, and tomorrow, August 2nd, they’re also running a raffle for their thirteenth bandaversary! Tickets are available through August 8th and for one dollar you’re entered to win just a trunkload of Tonks and the Aurors merch. [link] [link] [link]
A new wizard rock compilation is asking for submissions! They want music and poetry that centers trans and non-binary magical people in the wizarding world. The proceeds will be going to the Okra Project and Camp Lilac so if you’ve got a new project to share, this is the comp for you. [link]
Prolific and popular wizard rocker Totally Knuts has launched a Patreon! Tiers include commissioning a song, receiving handwritten letters, and access to a private livestream. [link]
On Sunday, August 9th, the Central Florida Slug Club is hosting Harry Potter yoga. It’s the perfect way to get limbered up before our next event which is… [link]
Geek Beat Radio’s first Trapped in the House show for August, also August 9th. The second show will be on the 23rd. Past shows have featured Siriusly Hazza P and Roonil Wazlib, as well as debuted new music by Percy and the Prefects, among others.
All these events, plus more than I couldn’t list, are on the Potterhead Calendar page of the website.
In new music news July was an incredible month for releases!
The Rotfang Conspiracy released their first EP and it is incredible. I’ve already picked a favorite song. (It’s “Untarnished Acceptance.”) [link]
Two bands called Slytherin both released new music this month. One plays metal and the other is EDM, so whatever style you prefer you’re covered. [link] [link]
A new band called Elderwand released an EP titled “I solemnly swear that I am up to no good” [link]
Kathryn Hoss [link], Shauna Carrick [link], Moss Bliss [link], and Aguamenti [link], also all graced us with new music.
Swish and Flick gave us the updated version of “If You Didn’t Come to Party” [link].
And new wizard rocker Aminata made a splash on Twitter with a Severus Snape diss track [link]
And finally, the Wizrocklopedia is back! The ‘pedia is almost as old as wizard rock itself, which makes sense because it’s the number one wrock news website. Your hostwitch is proud to be part of the team behind the relaunch but don’t worry, WZRD is still my first priority. But if you’re interested in reading—or writing—wizard rock news, go check it out! The transcript of this episode has links to all the new music, and the Wizrocklopedia.
Phew!
I told you there was a lot.
Here comes another music break, starting with “Draco Malfoy is Really a Sweetheart” by Alohomora.
~*~
That was “Draco Malfoy is Really a Sweetheart” by Alohomora [lyrics], The Hufflepuffs with “I’ve got a Crush on a Slytherin,” and “S-L-Y in Slytherin” by Swish and Flick [lyrics].
And with that, another episode of WZRD Radio comes to an end. I hope you had fun!
The transcript, with links to all the songs you heard and all the events I mentioned, can be found at WZRDRadioPod.WordPress.com. If you liked some of today’s music, consider buying it to support the artist. Without them, we wouldn’t be here.
If you’ve got a guess at what this month’s musical theme was, send it to me on Twitter at WZRDRadioPod. If you’re not on Twitter, you can leave a comment on the transcript or email me at WZRDRadioPod@gmail.com.
If you want to get WZRD Radio episodes early, give shout-outs to your friends, and support the Yes All Witches grant program, check out the WZRD Radio Patreon at Patreon.com/WZRDRadioPod. For two muggle dollars a month you become part of the WZRD Radio team and help support underrepresented voices in wizard rock.
Until next time, magical friends: “It is our choices…that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.”
End transcript.
