Hello magical friends, and welcome to Episode 28 of WZRD Radio. I’m your hostwitch Bess, and I hope your summer is looking as promising as mine. The flutterby bushes are blooming, the jobberknolls are returning from migration, and the Everglades’ horned serpents are waking up from their hibernation.
Let’s celebrate this season with some music!
First up we have ‘ow ‘orrible ‘arry, with “My Stance.”
~*~
That was ‘ow ‘orrible ‘arry with “My Stance” [lyrics], Gwendolyn Grace with “A Gryffindor Song,” “The Missing Part” by His Silver Hand, and “It’s an Eagle” by Dream Quaffle [lyrics].
June’s wandoscope is for that rare wix who carries an elder wand.
It’s not easy to carry an elder wand. Between the expectations that you’ll fulfill a ‘special destiny’ and the threatening proverb ‘wand of elder, never prosper,’ there’s a lot of pressure on you. But for now, try not to worry about any of it. Where you are right now will find its place in the timeline of your life; you’re doing just fine. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, grab someone who always has your back–like a rowan wand–and hide out for a while. Make a movie night of it, or even a weekend getaway. The world can wait.
Next up is Daniel Kelly with “Hermione.”
~*~
That was Daniel Kelly with “Hermione” [lyrics] “Who Now?” by Wolfsbane, “Halloween at Hogwarts” by Ginny and the Heartbreakers [lyrics], and Professor Filk with “Nimbus 2000.”
And now, the weather. I’m just kidding, it’s June’s wrock and Potter events!
Starting today, June 1st, Naomi Westwater is teaching a virtual 10 week course on supremacy in the wizarding world, drawing parallels to what’s happening in the muggleverse. [link]
If you love drive-in theaters and are in South Daytona, FL on June 4th, you’re in luck! The local park service will be showing Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone at Reed Canal Park. [link]
If you’re fully vaccinated and in the area on June 5th, you can go see the Blibbering Humdingers live at ConCarolinas in Charlotte, North Carolina. [link]
Want to meet passionate Harry Potter activists? Harry Potter Alliance DC is meeting on Zoom on June 17th. [link]
Also on June 17th, the Arc of Lincoln is hosting virtual Harry Potter bingo and games. [link]
June 24th is Harry Potter Book Night, so check your local library, bookstore, and community event planner to see what they’ve got brewing. [link]
Submissions to the 2021 Wizard Rock Sampler are due to TK of Totally Knuts by the end of the month, June 30th. [link]
Speaking of TK, they’ve opened submissions to Hut on the Wrock 2; this time focusing on drinking songs, the kind we can all sing along to. Get your song in before August 1st. [link]
Cruciatus Curse’s long-awaited album “TH1RTE3N” is out this month, on June 10th! [link]
And, of course, keep an eye on Ashley Hamel, Totally Knuts, Tonks and the Aurors, and Geek Beat Radio for their monthly performances.
As for music that was released in May, we’ve got a great selection:
Bradley of Draco & the Malfoys released a play-along for ukulele of “Wow, Awesome Silver Hand!” by Roonil Wazlib. [link]
MuggleNet hosted Wizovision, the magical, wizard-rocky version of Eurovision. [link]
The intriguing new ‘Potter pop’ project Gnargles burst onto the scene. [link]
Swell Rell released “We Are Slytherin.” [link]
Matt Maggiacomo relaunched his Patreon with the release of ‘Revisionist History.’ [link]
Hut on the Wrock the first, the sea shanty comp, was released. [link]
And finally, Mermanda released “What Pictures?” in response to May’s Bertie Bott’s Every Flavour Jam prompt. [link]
Coming up, “I Stayed Behind” by the Slytherin Sweethearts.
~*~
That was “I Stayed Behind” by the Slytherin Sweethearts, “All Your Faves” by homo qui vixit [lyrics], and “The Last Knut” by the Gringotts Girls.
And this, alas, is the end of our show.
If you like WZRD and want to support it, now is a great time to join the WZRD Radio Patreon at Patreon.com/WZRDRadioPod. We’re doing a small contest over there this month—everyone is giving me their best episode theme ideas and my favorite is going to get a WZRD Radio care package. So for two muggle dollars a month you can get in on that and support the Yes All Witches grant. Yes All Witches, of course, is a microgrant program for queer and BIPoC wizard rockers who need just a little boost to get going.
And don’t forget, if you heard a song you love, visit the transcript at WZRDRadioPod.WordPress.com and consider buying it. It’s the most direct way to support a musician and as you know, without them we wouldn’t be here.
Once you’ve downloaded your new favorite songs, come tell me about it! You can also get your guess about this episode’s theme to me on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook at WZRDRadioPod. If you’re not on social media, you can leave a comment on the transcript or email me at WZRDRadioPod@gmail.com.
Until next time, magical friends: I’ll be in my room, making no noise and pretending I’m not there.
